Swivel Castors and wheels can swivel 360 degrees about the vertical axis (see figure below). They consist of a housing and a caster wheel. The housing itself is made up of a plate fitting, swivel bearings and a yoke. The Yoke is often referred to as the castor's frame (see figure below).
The plate fitting determines how the... castor is going to be attached to the equipment. It is usually either a single bolt hole fitting or a plate fixing which is generally square, rectangular or triangular. Plate fittings are usually bolted to equipment so knowing your required bolt hole centres is important. The Swivel Head consists of a ball race and a number of ball bearings that roll within it. Swivel Castors can either have a single ball race or a double ball race. They perform the same function. The double ball race was developed for medium and heavy applications. This is because they are compact, perform well under static and dynamic loads and provide excellent steerability.
Swivel castors can be fitting with locks which lock (brake) wither the wheel or the swivel head or both. See Brake Castors.
Swivel Castor Components
Swivel Castor Offset
The Swivel Castor's offset it the distance from the swivel axis to the centre of the wheel (where it is secured to the castor frame). It is the reason a swivel castor will go in the direction you want it to go regardless its starting direction. The offset and castor wheel's diameter make up the swivel radius where the swivel radius = Offset + (Wheel Diameter / 2).
This is the radius of circle described but the outer dimension of the wheel swivelling around the vertical axis. Basically, this is important because it tells you how much room is needed for the swivel caster to swivel. Furthermore, the general rule is the bigger the offset the better the castor's running performance but the lower the weight it can carry.Read More

There is double thrust bearing in the swivel head to achieve a high load capacity and maintain castor performance and durability. The role of the spring in an AGV castor is different to that of a standard shock absorbing castor. In a standard shock absorbing castor, the spring absorbs shock and noise whereas, it's role in a AGV castor is primarily to keep the wheels in contact with the floor. When determining the overall height requirement of a shock absorbing AVG, it should be designed based on the spring cushion being fully compressed. The shock absorbing pad made from a special rubber compound absorbs minor shocks and vibrations to protect the AGV unit. There is a 10mm range of compression which helps prevent the castors from losing contact with the floor which may be caused by small floor imperfections. An AGV's castor leaving the floor when changing directions is often the cause of the AGV becoming unbalanced and coming to a stop by straying off its designated path. The Top Plate is 145mm x 145mm and has 4 bolt holes that are spaced 120mm x 120mm, each with a 11mm hole diameterThis castor frame has two wheels with a Polyurethane tyre (Shore A 95) on an Aluminium centre each containing ball bearings, Having a twin wheel castor is great for reducing the effort required to swivel the castor and most efficient by reducing the amount of room the castor needs to turn the AGV Cart. The polyurethane wheel has excellent elasticity the minimises slipping that can happen when an AGV starts or stops. In addition, the elasticity also absorbs small shocks arising from small imperfections in the floor. The wheel itself is non marking and will not damage the floor.

There is a hardened Taper Roller Bearing in he swivel head, which has a grease nipple, for smooth swivelling action and durability. The castor is unique because it has a self-aligned function enabled by two swivelling axes each with different swivelling radii so that the castor's offset can automatically alter when changing direction to optimise the castor's turning circle for the AGV. For the compression performance, please see the image for the curve by clicking on the thumbnail image above. To use this curve, please calculate the weight being carried by this castor and divide that by the one less than the number of castors on your equipment, So if you have a trolley using 4 of these castors and the total weight being carried is 500kg, then the compression of the rubber pad is the reading given on the y axis at 167kg (500kg / 3 = 167kg) which is between 11 and 12mm.

We stock a complete range of swivel castors and their associate Fixed and Braked Castors (where available). Our ranges come with a wide variety of top plate sizes and fixing bolt hole centres.
The ranges include pressed steel, Stainless Steel and Fabricated or welded castor housings.
A castor’s size is usually referred to by the wheel’s diameter. The most common sizes are 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 80mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 160mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm. These are the wheel sizes and because the swivel head sits above the caster wheel, the castor’s overall height will be somewhat larger than the wheel. We’ve had some customers purchase a 100mm Castor expecting it to be 100mm tall, it’s not, it’s usually around 128mm tall.
Each Swivel Castor can have a wide range of castor wheels. Nylon, Polypropylene, Rubber Tyre, Elastic Rubber Tyre, Polyurethane Tyres and Cast Iron Wheels are the most common.
