Fixed Castors
Fixed Castors are sometimes referred to as rigid castors. This is because Fixed castors are indeed Rigid and can only perform straight line movements. The bracket is formed from a single sheet of steel or stainless steel pressed into the desired shape. Alternatively, fabricated castors are made from forged steel, the yokes (or side plates...) are welded to the top plate. In both cases, fixed castors do not have any moving parts. The wheel sits directly under the top plate so that the castor offset is zero. Conversely, swivel castors have the centre of the wheel offset from the centre of the top plate (where the swivel axis is). The longer the offset the more easily the castor can self-align to the direction of force. That is, direction you want to castor to go. See here for swivel castors.
Fixed castors are generally used either in perfectly straight aisles where you want your trolley to only move forwards and backwards. It is more common that Rigid Castors are used in in conjunction with swivel or lockable swivel castors. They provide stability to your trolleys movement when travelling in a straight line and steering when rounding curves or corners.
Using Fixed Castors
A combination of Fixed and Swivelling castors is the most common configuration (two fixed and two swivel). With this configuration turning on the spot is quite hard. If you need to do this maybe all swivel castors is what you need. The addition of a directional locks can turn some castors into fixed castors and back again. Call us on 0121 772 1010 to learn more.
A word of caution. If you are using a six castor configuration, the two central castors should be Rigid Castors and at least one size bigger than those at the front and at the back. Furthermore, the two central castors must be able to hold at least half the total weight so they are strong enough to enable the platform to pivot on them. The Fixed Bracket has a 4 hole top plate with 80x60mm bolt hole spacing. The load capacity of this castor is 130kg using manual propulsion at 4km/h (walking speed)The Polyurethane tyre offers a low tractive resistance making it easier to get moving compared with softer rubber tread wheels. It is also a bit softer than hard tread wheels making the castor smoother and quieter running. The polyurethane tyre is also non-marking and gentle on floors while the roller bearing lowers the rolling resistance to reduce the effort required to move the castors. Put this wheel into a strong bracket and you have a castor that is a great choice for the wide range of industrial and domestic applications. - In Stock

For the compression performance, please see the image for the curve by clicking on the thumbnail image above. To use this curve, please calculate the weight being carried by this castor and divide that by the one less than the number of castors on your equipment, So if you have a trolley using 4 of these castors and the total weight being carried is 500kg, then the compression of the rubber pad is the reading given on the y axis at 167kg (500kg / 3 = 167kg) which is between 11 and 12mm.

The wheel as a soft (Shore 80A) polyurethane tyre for high elasticity and is fitted with a precision ball bearing. This castor has as load capacity of 40kg.The brake locks the wheel only allowing the swivel head to rotate freely when applied. The Top Plate is made from pressed steel and the frame is aluminium. The parts have powder coated and zinc plated for protectionThe shock absorbing functions means that the overall height can vary by 10mm. The castor's height without load is 100mm and this reduces incrementally by up to 10mm as the load increases providing up t0 10mm of compression for a fine shock absorbing function. - In Stock
